Ảo hóa storage không còn là công nghệ xa lạ gì trong nhiều năm gần đây, các sản phẩm đã đi vào độ ổn định và áp dụng ở hàng chục ngàn các công ty khác nhau trên khắp thế giới. Ảo hóa storage (Storage Virtualization) là một phương án giúp các nhà quản trị dễ dàng quản lý tài nguyên, cải thiện hiệu năng, mở rộng dung lượng một cách dễ dàng hơn và ít chi phí hơn. Cùng một mục tiêu nhưng mỗi hãng cung cấp giải pháp như Vmware vSAN, Nutanix Acropolis OS (AOS), DataCore SANSymphony sẽ tiếp cận theo nhiều phương án khác nhau và tùy từng bài toán cụ thể. Chính vì thế trong quá trình lựa chọn giải pháp các nhà quản trị cần hiểu rõ bài toán của doanh nghiệp mình đồng thời với bản chất của giải pháp để lựa chọn cho phù hợp.

Một số hãng thì sẽ xây dựng một lớp “ảo hóa storage” (hay có thể gọi là software storage controller) trên nền tảng ảo hóa phần cứng có sẵn. Đây là cách mà Nutanix AOS hay VMWare vSAN xây dựng. Hay có hãng sẽ xây dựng “ảo hóa storage” ngay trên phần cứng mà không phải trên lớp Hypervisor nữa. Đây là cách DataCore SANSymphony theo đuổi.

DataCore là hãng triển khai các giải pháp Ảo Hóa Lưu Trữ (SDS-Software-Defined-Storage) lâu đời (từ 2008). Với cách tiếp cận là xây dựng lớp “ảo hóa storage” trực tiếp trên phần cứng thì DataCore SANSymphony có độ linh hoạt hơn so với các giải pháp khác. SANSymphony có thể kết nối trực tiếp với các bộ lưu trữ khác bên ngoài và tập hợp các không gian lưu trữ này vào một “không gian lưu trữ dùng chung” từ đó thông qua các tính năng cao cấp của mình như: auto-tierinng (tự động phân tải), caching, Dedup/Compress, Backup, Replication, Thin Provisioning, Encryption… để cung cấp dịch vụ cho các ứng dụng khác.

Ngoài ra DataCore SANSymphony được thiết kế dựa trên công nghệ Parallel IO (cho phép xử lý song song nhiều tác vụ) và Caching trên RAM hay Persistent Memory nên tốc độ xử lý và giảm độ trễ.

Vậy DataCore SANSymphony nên sử dụng trong các tình huống sau:

• Thay thế cho các tủ đĩa cũ với nhiều tính năng mới.
• Quản lý tập trung các tủ đĩa đang có.
• Hiện đại hóa hạ tầng lưu trữ và cung cấp thêm nhiều dịch vụ khác nhau cho đội phát triển ứng dụng.
• Tối ưu hóa, tăng tốc xử lý, cải thiện hiệu năng của tủ đĩa chuyên dụng hiện có.
• Mở rộng dung lượng.
• Góp tài nguyên để tiến hành các bước tiếp theo trong lộ trình lên điện toán đám mây.

Điểm chung của Nutanix AOS và VMware vSAN là xây dựng giải pháp ảo hóa storage dựa trên hạ tầng Hypervisor hiện có của mình. Với cách tiếp cận này thì giải pháp này cho phép admin tích hợp với hạ tầng ảo hóa hiện có thuận tiện và nhanh chóng. Từ đó cung cấp các dịch vụ Storage cho các máy ảo (VM) dễ dàng. Ngoài ra hệ sinh thái của Nutanix và VMware khá tốt và có lộ trình mở rộng, xây dựng Private Cloud (hạ tầng điện toán đám mây dùng riêng) rõ ràng. Như khách hàng đang sử dụng Nutanix có thể sử dụng Prism để quản lý chung các tài nguyên tính toán (VM) và Storage (AOS) trên cùng một giao diện. Từ đó dần xây dựng Private Cloud hay Multi-Cloud một cách dễ hơn.

Vì tiếp cận “ảo hóa storage” theo hướng trên nên có hạn chế là tích hợp với các bộ lưu trữ ngoài không linh hoạt (hoặc không được). Nutanix AOS và vSAN phải sử dụng chính các ổ HDD, SSD của mình để cung cấp tài nguyên lưu trữ cho các VM. Ngoài ra vSAN cũng không hỗ trợ các máy chủ ứng dụng bare-metal (không ảo hóa).

• Doanh nghiệp muốn tận dụng tài nguyên ổ cứng của các server đã ảo hóa thành storage.
